Concepts x Converse “Southern Flame” Pack

In 1891, James Naismith drafted the 13 original rules for the game of basketball while teaching at the YMCA training school in Springfield, MA. The equipment? Two peach baskets and a soccer ball. Little did he know that it would serve as the foundation of the sport’s rich 130-year history, which has produced legends, created unforgettable moments and broken cultural barriers that today reach far beyond the town of Springfield.

It’s no small coincidence that both Converse and Concepts call Massachusetts their home and often look to the sport’s storied roots to inform their future. Like the game itself, Converse has evolved over its 110+ year history – entrenched in the threads of various sub-cultures and communities since the 1917 introduction of the Non-Skid basketball shoe, now recognized as the iconic Chuck Taylor All Star.

To commemorate the past and future of basketball culture, Converse and CONCEPTS present a fresh view in a new pack comprised of two silhouettes: the Chuck 70 and recently introduced performance-ready All Star BB Evo. The pack celebrates the inception of the sport and the barriers it’s broken culturally since.

Design cues are inspired by the peach basket – the game’s original hoop – including the fruit and flowers, are juxtaposed against modern performance materials, benefits and colors.

“We share a vision for showcasing Boston as our home, so this was an opportunity to show the world one of the most unique stories the city has to offer. We wanted to ignite a conversation about the history of the sport, so when we explored the significance of peach baskets, it opened a think tank for what we could introduce to the color palette and materials for the sneakers, while staying true to the origins of the game,” said Deon Point, Creative Director at Concepts.

The All Star BB Evo, an evolution of the All Star Pro BB introduced in 2019, channels the game in a playful sense – nodding to the nascency of the performance silhouette and the peach itself. The upper on the performance model shares a mix of Shadow Lime and Green Oasis colorways – a nod to the peach’s coloring before it becomes ripe. Each lateral side showcases a flocked Star Chevron logo to carry on its design inspiration. And, a subtle standout lies within the interior as a CONCEPTS-branded peach blossom print is discoverable on the sockliner and translucent outsole. The design is completed with dual Converse and CONCEPTS branding.

“When the creative process begins with, and is tethered to, a strong and meaningful story, it pushes you to think about the design and its details in a different and more unique way. Tarek and Deon are able to combine rich storytelling with an amazing sensibility for elevated design execution and this collection is no exception,” said Matt Sleep, Converse Global Design Director for Footwear and Special Projects.
